NAME: Kara Zor-El
AGE: Physically/Mentally 19, Actually 46 as she spent 25 years in suspended animation.
CANON: DC Comics (The New 52)
CANON HISTORY: Here is her canon history in wiki form.
CANON PERSONALITY:
Kara Zor-El, the Last Daughter of Krypton, is a compassionate, strong willed person at the core. However, Kara has a lot of deep seeded resentment for her situation and that has led her to become a somewhat self-destructive, maladjusted individual. She does not have many healthy coping mechanisms for the myriad of traumas she has experienced, and it very often drives a wedge between her and the people in her life.
When the reader is introduced to Kara, she's shown to be a sweet, kind girl living happily on Krypton with her parents. She's genuine, friendly, polite, and respectful. She acts as a mediator between her father Zor-El and her uncle Jor-El, attempting to get the estranged House of El back together. Her mother comments on how well she does, and her father seems genuinely pleased with her ambition, commenting on it in his personal logs. Superboy states the same thing, telling Superman after a time travel story that he felt that Kara was basically a model citizen and that he couldn't believe how different she was.
Of course, she doesn't stay like that. Those traits are still present, but decades in suspended animation, a hostile introduction to Earth, and the devastation of losing everything she has ever known and loved has tarnished her feelings towards the world. When Kara first lands, she confronts her situation with a belligerent anger and unwillingness to accept the reality of her situation. This anger is an aspect of her personality that festers and bubbles beneath the surface, a wellspring of resentment that overwhelms her from time to time.
This aggression very often manifests when she is confronted with any sort of antagonistic force. Unlike her cousin Superman, Kara has no qualms about using her full strength to end a fight as quickly as she can. She isn't a killer, and she still holds back that much, but she's much more likely to leave an enemy with broken bones than he is. This aggression also leads to her joining the Red Lantern Corps, an interstellar group that uses rage to fuel their own power. Her aggressiveness also leads her to pick fights, deliberately antagonizing people who she's upset with and trying to bait them into brawling with her. Lashing out when she feels she's being pushed into something is another common thing, especially at Superman, because she knows he can take it. When she does get into altercations, she's a bit like a bull in a china shop. She very rarely takes into account the damage that she can cause, and this leads many other superheroes to disdain her or call her out, which only makes her more upset, creating a feedback loop of negativity.
Loneliness and depression are hallmarks of Kara's personality, and in part these are problems of her own making. She does not cope well with being one of the small handful of Kryptonians left in the universe, and she very often pushes people away and retreats into herself. She tends to think of herself as a perpetual immigrant, and claims that there is no way that she can fit in on Earth. This isn't entirely false, as Earth social norms are somewhat difficult for her to grasp. She does not adjust well, and it takes years for that to happen, as well as two deaths and the clarity of a trip into the magical blood pools of Ysmault, which help calm down anyone submerged inside. (Yes that's a thing, and yes it's weird and gross but it happened!)
Kara has some issues with being perpetually in the shadow of other people. Being related to Superman, and being another universe's version of Powergirl made things extremely difficult for her. She chafes at being compared to either of them and has something of an inferiority complex regarding them. She makes connections to Earthlings with some difficulty, and her only real friends are aliens like Maxima, outcasts like Siobhan Smythe, or antiheroes like Guy Gardner. Kara has had quite a lot of difficulty emotionally due to a string of betrayals and hurts, and because of this she's developed issues with trust. She's wary, extremely so, around most people until she gets to know them, and that makes her seem standoffish.
Still under all of this tarnish, there is a bit of light. Kara is still extremely kind, going out of her way to protect the less fortunate. She may be a little more grumbly about it than her cousin, but she still stands on the side of what she things is right. She does not kill, she does her best not to hurt anyone, and she fights anyone that would take away the life, freedom, or safety of another living being. Not quite Truth, Justice, and the American Way, but she does her best. Once she gave up the Red Lantern ring, she became much more of an optimist, and actively tries to blend in, accepting her situation a little more thanks to the mentorship of Guy Gardner and by seeing where rage took Atrocitus (Yes that is his name). She states flatly that she doesn't want to be like that, and uses that as inspiration to move forward and begin becoming more accepting and friendly. It's a slow process but she's getting back to where she was before Krypton was destroyed.
That's basically it. In buzzwords, Kara is kind, compassionate, and sweet, a model citizen with a heart of gold. She is also deeply troubled, angry, depressed, aggressive, and mistrustful. She's a good person who just wanted to be a normal girl and she is now dealing with some very, very unreasonable stuff.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Okay. So. Kara is a Kryptonian just like Superman, and as such possesses a positively ridiculous array of superpowers. Enough that Kryptonians have their own wiki article. For simplicity's sake, I will divide this up into two categories, powers available under a Yellow Sun, and powers unrelated to Kryptonian Physiology.
Under a Yellow Sun
Heat Vision: Kara can fire blasts of intense heat from her eyes, with control over the scope, degree of heat, and area of effect.
Super-Hearing: Kara's hearing is incredibly sensitive, and she can pick up on sounds from about the radius of New York City. She can pick up on sounds that are higher or lower than the human ear can detect, and can pick out specific sounds from miles around. She can tune these out with concentration and use normal human hearing.
Enhanced Vision: Kara's vision is similar to her hearing. With concentration she can see the majority of the electromagnetic spectrum (including radio waves), and she possesses telescopic vision like the zoom on a camera. She can see through solid matter save for lead with X-Ray vision, and she has microscopic vision. Finally, she also can see in infrared.
Flight: Kara can fly. Pretty simple.
Invulnerability: Kara is extremely difficult to injure. Her body is highly resistant to all forms of damage save for injuries from someone possessing a similar kind of invulnerability, or something that targets her weakness. If she is injured, her body heals more rapidly.
Superhuman Physique: Kara is incredibly strong, possesses near infinite stamina, and can move at impossible speeds. She's physically strong enough to lift skyscrapers, crush diamonds, and tear through mountains with little difficulty. She can act for indefinite periods of time, though she still needs to eat, drink, and sleep. She can hold her breath for hours at a time, and move fast enough to catch a bullet, or leave an afterimage when she moves. She tends to be exactly as strong and fast as the story needs, just like Superman.
Super-Breath: Kara can expel a blast of freezing cold air, or release near hurricane force winds with this power. Relatedly Kara can release a super-sonic scream capable of damaging electronics for some reason.
Solar Energy Absorb/Release: All of this is powered by Kara simply being exposed to yellow sunlight. She absorbs the energy in the sun and uses it much like a plant. She can also release this in bursts of intense light and heat, though doing so drains her for hours.
Weaknesses: Kara has three weaknesses while under a yellow sun. The first is Kryptonite, radioactive rocks from her home planet that begin to degrade her cells. There are other varieties of Kryptonite, some of which are quite silly, and they have different effects depending on the color. This can range from enraging Kara to...splitting her into a dark and a light half. The second vulnerability is Magic. Magic affects Kryptonians as it would anything else, so a magic sword ignores her vulnerability, a magic fireball will burn her, etc. Finally, Kara is vulnerable to sensory overloads, which can leave her catatonic for hours.
Independent of a Yellow Sun
Combat training: Kara was trained to fight in several unarmed martial arts on Krypton, and at the Crucible Academy. She has also learned to shoot a bow from the Green Arrow, and to use a spear, a sword, and an ax during her time leading a rebellion on ancient Krypton during a crazy time travel storyline.
Multilingualism: Kara is fluent in English and Kryptonian, and she speaks a smattering of other languages.
Genius Level Intellect: Kara is genetically predispositioned towards being a scientific genius. On Krypton, parents employed a complex gene-matching system to give children desired traits, and as Kara's parents were leaders among the Science Caste, she was "designed" to follow in their footsteps.
Red Lantern Ring: The Red Lantern Ring is an item Kara has possessed in canon and the powers and abilities it grants are listed in the wiki article. Kara would need to regain a Red Ring to use this, and that would be a significant plot. I'm including this solely because of the possibility of regaining the ring. The ring does not require any sort of solar energy, merely an appropriate amount of rage.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Karen "Kara" Ellis
AU AGE: 28
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Kara is a little older than her canon counterpart, as she grew up and is closer to her true age. She is taller, a little more filled out, a bit closer to her mother, Alura In-Ze. She's not nearly as fit as she is in canon, but still has short blonde hair and blue eyes. She's not fat, merely comfortable, and unconcerned with physical activity. She has chronic asthma, a childhood illness that has never quite gone away, and she made it worse by smoking in her college days. This asthma has also lead to chronic migraines, a condition that can sometimes lay her out for days.

AU HISTORY:
Karen Ellis was in Midvale, Oklahoma. Midvale is a small farming town basically the middle of nowhere. Her mother was the mayor and her father ran a business selling tractor parts and running a kind of feed and tackle store. Karen hated small town life, and like many kids dreamed of a better life somewhere in the big city. Not much of note happened during her childhood.
She was always interested in the sciences and excelled at it, so she moved away from home to study biology at Stanford. Working hard, she went on a full ride scholarship that she earned through winning a science quiz competition in high school.
She did extremely well in undergrad and moved into higher academics, attending University of Michigan for Bioengineering where she earned her Ph.D. in the field. Karen's research focused on the field of prosthetic cybernetics, and her major breakthrough was working on creating an artificial finger that allowed limited touch sensation to be felt by the user. It was very much a work in progress but it gained her enough acclaim that she was hired to work as a researcher at Recolle University.
Karen moved to Recolle a couple of years ago and has more or less kept her head down and in the lab. No major breakthroughs, but she's working on it. While she was still studying, her parents briefly fostered Kara Lee
maidofmistakes (Permission Granted), and Kara was the cause of a nasty fight that ended with Karen and her family not being on speaking terms. Karen disliked the way they simply decided the girl wasn't "a good fit" and sent her away, and a small part of her decision to go to Recolle was wanting to reunite with Kara.
AU PERSONALITY:
In this AU, there are a few key differences. First and foremost, Karen's issues differ from Kara's because she isn't one of the last of a dead race from a destroyed planet. She's just a bitter, but ambitious young woman who was extremely unhappy with where she grew up. She moved on with her life, and has done her best to abandon everything that came with life in Midvale. She has less issues with this than canon Kara, because she doesn't want to be a part of that life.
She also does not have an incredibly famous cousin that she's in the shadow of. She instead has to deal with the spectre of growing up in a rural area coming back to haunt her while she's living it up in the big city. She does everything she can to hide that, and if people start asking too many questions about Midvale she'll probably shut them down.
Karen is much less aggressive than her canon counterpart, too. She's grouchy and can be kind of bitter, but the world hasn't taken away everything she knew and tossed her in 25 years of stasis. She's not nearly as bad at fitting in as Kara either, mostly because she grew up on Earth and is for all she knows completely human!
Other than those changes, she is still an incredibly compassionate person who has dedicated her work life towards making the world better. She is following in her canon father's footsteps, working on Cybernetics to improve life for amputees and those dealing with birth defects. She wants to help, wants to change the world, and she aims to do just that. It's not superheroics, but it's good in it's own way!

AU Addendum
Instead of a scientist that grew up in Midvale, Oklahoma Kara grew up in Recolle. She is 22 instead of 27, and she has no degree or any education past high school. Her parents, instead of being politicians and retailers are instead criminals who were arrested at 18 for being part of a criminal ring focused on thievery and extortion.
At 16 years old, she joined a bike gang with connections to her parents criminal past. She was a part of this group until she connected to Retrospec, where memories of her former life helped her go 'straight'. She acted primarily as muscle and a courier for arms deals and other small-time offenses, and was never implicated or charged with any crime. She now owns a small custom motorcycle shop that does mechanical work as well.
The only CR that's changed is with Kara Lee/Lina Ellis. Instead of being a foster sibling, she's Kara's blood relative and lives with her.
